Deacon Walter Scott is the sixth son born on September 20, 1930, in Fort Coffee/Spiro, Oklahoma to the parents of Benjamin and Lucille Scott. He had the nickname of Biggen when growing up with eleven brothers and five sisters. Both parents (Benjamin Franklin Scott, Sr and Lucella Eubanks Scott), seven brothers (Ben Franklin Scott, Jr., Herman Scott, James Henry Scott, Tilton Scott, Sammie Jean Scott, Huey Lee Scott, the Rev. Marion Scott) and three sisters (Luvenia Scott Graham, Lorene Scott Thomas, Minnie Ella Scott Kirvens) have transitioned from earthly labor to heavenly reward.
Walter's grammar school years were at Washington Grade School with a completion of high school at Douglass High School. He labored many years on the Scott family farm. In 1952, he attended college at Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma. He wasn't able to complete his college studies as he was called to serve in the United States Army in the Korean War. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he relocated to Wichita, Kansas and started a business called Blackmon and Scott Service Station. Additionally, he started another career with Wichita USD 259 and retired as a Head Custodial Supervisor after many years of dedicated service. After Walter retired from the School Board, he took the role of Head Custodian at the Greater St. Mary's Missionary Baptist Church, a role he cherished until his health failed.
Walter, a man of strong Christian faith, joined the Greater St. Mary's Baptist Church in 1953. Walter was able to serve in many key roles at St. Mary's includes Deacon and after fifty plus years of dedicated service he was honored as Deacon Emeritus. Known for his robust voice, he did not need a microphone to praise the Lord which is shown in his great love for praise, worship and devotion. A man of God with many talents and gifts Walter has been loyal to following ministries over the years, Wednesday noon and evening prayer services, whether alone or with several dedicated members, he is always willing and able to lead others to the throne of grace. Walter has also served as the Chairman of the Deacons Board, Layman President, Superintendent of Sunday School, Sunday School Teacher, Community Liaison for government food disbursement to community seniors. And a Willing Worker for church projects related to the First Aide Committee. And a devoted member of the Ministerial Prayer Band.
For sixty-five years as a member and servant-leader, Walter joyfully served at Greater St. Mary's. And as an inside joke with those he has co-labored with, he can work magic with gray tape.
Family is also an important component of Walter's life, his wife Mrs. Lillian Fatherree-Scott.
Lillian also has children, stepchildren and grandchildren. And as an elder brother and spiritual advisor to siblings Clarence Ester Scott, Joe Franklin Scott, Emma Faye Scott Johnson, Isiah Scott, Retired Major Josh Lee Scott and Maureen Ann Scott Bristol and left to cherish his memory is four generations of nieces and nephews.
Also preceded him in death, Lucille had one daughter, Donna Peeks (Nathanial), and one son, who is also deceased and one granddaughter, Bianca Johnson. Walter has one daughter, Beverly Ann Alex-Walker (Roy). Beverly has four children (Jessica Jenkins, Kenya Thomas, Aisha Allen, and Donald Steward) and ten grandchildren.
Walter's motto for living a great life would be to keep Christ in your life for all generations to come because what you do for Christ will last. Always try to better yourself with the proper life skills and tools through education because no one can take that knowledge and training from you.
