Obituary

Terry Don Guidry, a native of Beaumont, Texas, was born on August 21, 1943, to Alex and Ruby Mae Guidry. The oldest of four children, he attended Hebert High School where he was a National Merit Scholar and a sprinter on the Track team. He came to Wichita, Kansas, in 1961 and attended Wichita State University on a Track scholarship.  He still holds indoor Track and Field records at WSU.

In 1967, upon graduation, having earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education, he became a member of Holy Savior Catholic Church, married Anita Williams and was drafted into the Army. In 1969, his daughter, Nichole Leschelle was born, continuing the "Guidry Legacy" as an educator. Later he obtained a Master of Education Degree as well as Administrative Certification at Wichita State University.

He served Unified School District 259 in Wichita, Kansas, his entire career. He began teaching Social Studies at Hadley Junior High upon discharge from the United States Army in 1969.  He then transferred to Wichita High School North where he taught History and Physical Education. He later became the Cross-Country Head Coach and eventually an administrator.  He was the Associate Principal at North High for many years and then transferred to Wichita High School East where he retired as Associate Principal in 1997.

Throughout his career he worked in Track and Field officiating at meets and coaching the Shocker Striders Track Club in the summers. He served as an official for all (USTFF) United States Track and Field Federated track meets held in Wichita.

He has a Life Membership in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and Wichita State University Alumni Association.  His work in the community included memberships in various organizations: Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel (KARSP), Knights of Peter Claver, Inc., Optimists of Northeast Wichita, and Sigma Pi Phi  Fraternity Alpha Nu Boulé as well as volunteering at  Holy Savior , Catholic Church as a member of the God's Food Pantry team. On February 22, 2019, he was named to the Black Educators Hall of Fame.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Ruby Mae as well as his brother, William Lee Guidry. Left to cherish his memory: His wife, Anita;  Brother, Joe Lester (Brenda); Sister-in-Law, Sallie; Sister, Barbara Bailey (Leroy); God sister, Ruby Marie Woodard; Daughter, Nichole Leschelle Penelton (Derrick); his  pride and joy Grandson Derrick Gordon Penelton II, and a host of nieces, nephews, church family and fraternal brothers.
