Samuel Peter Allen, Jr., known to friends and family as Sam, passed away peacefully
surrounded by loved ones. Born on September 26, 1941, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania,
Sam devoted his life to education, leadership, and service to others.
Sam's journey in education began in 1962, when he moved from McKeesport to
Wichita, Kansas to attend Wichita State University. While there, he became a proud
member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and earned both his Bachelor's and Master's
Degrees in Secondary Education and Administration.
Following graduation, Sam began his teaching career at Mathewson Middle School,
where his passion for helping students truly blossomed. Over the years, he taught at
six middle schools and served as assistant principal at three, leaving a lasting impact
on countless students and colleagues.
His dedication and leadership led him to the high school level, where he served as
Assistant Principal at Wichita South High School for three years and Wichita East High
School for nine years. He also served as Secondary Director for Area 1
Superintendents for five years.
In 1993, Sam's career came full circle when he became Principal at John Marshall
Middle School, a position he held with distinction for nine years before retiring in 2002.
His 33-year career with the USD 259 school district stands as a testament to his
lifelong commitment to education and community.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Peter Allen, Sr. and Lillian
Thompson Allen, and by his first wife, Dolores Ann Williams Allen. He is survived by his
beloved wife, Barbara Ann Ferguson Allen; his children, Lisa Yvonne Allen of Dallas,
Texas, and Samuel Peter Allen, III; his sister, Shirley Felton; and his cherished
grandchildren, Samuel Peter Allen, IV, Avery Michelle Allen, and Gabrielle Dolores Allen.
Sam will be remembered for his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering dedication to
shaping young minds. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, both in
and out of the classroom.
