Okon J. Essien, known to his loved ones as Okon, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2024, in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 81. He was born on December 24, 1942, in Nigeria to his parents Chief Elder Johnson Ekemini Essien and Mbafu Asikpo. Okon leaves behind his beloved wife Virgie Essien, his children Justina Inyang, Johnson Ekemimi Essien, Andrew Essien, and Larry Jackson, as well as 11 cherished grandchildren.

He obtained his master's degree from Wichita State University and dedicated his career to education, serving as a teacher in the USD 259 school district. Okon touched the lives of many students and colleagues throughout his years of teaching.

His warm smile, gentle demeanor, and unwavering dedication to his family were just a few of the personal traits that made Okon truly special. He will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and love that he shared with everyone he met.

A service to celebrate Okon's life will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Jackson Mortuary Chapel, followed by a burial at Lakeview Cemetery.

Okon J. Essien will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love and memories he created during his lifetime.
