Obituary

Melody McCray-Miller, the first African American woman to represent Sedgwick County's 4th District on the Board of Commissioners, passed away at age 69. A lifelong Wichita resident, she dedicated more than 30 years to public service and community leadership.

McCray-Miller's career spanned multiple roles of influence: she served as a Sedgwick County Commissioner, represented the 89th House District in the Kansas Legislature (2005–2013), and served as an at-large member of the Wichita Board of Education. She also worked as a secondary education teacher in Wichita Public Schools and as an adjunct lecturer in Political Science at Wichita State University.

Beyond government, McCray-Miller was the principal owner and co-founder of Miller's Inc. Colleagues and community members remembered her as a devoted advocate for equity, opportunity, and the voices of those often unheard. She was known for listening deeply, asking the right questions, and mentoring young leaders with genuine care and conviction.

She is survived by her three daughters, Sharice, Laurice, and Christine; six grandchildren, Andrea, Adrian, Ariel, Amari, Markell, and Makayla; and four great-grandchildren, Her siblings Frankie Conley, Brother-in-law Charles Conley, Anthony McCray and Kent McCray.

Her legacy of service, integrity, and unwavering commitment to her community will continue to inspire those she touched.
