Owens
February 24, 1935 – June 7, 2023
Herman Owens was born on 2/24/1935 to Elzeter Owens and Prince Owens in Geary Oklahoma. He departed this life on Wednesday June 7th, 2023, at the age of 88. Herman was born the 3rd child of 4, however he was the baby of the family as the fourth child died prematurely.
Herman attended and graduated from Booker T Washington High School in 1953(Enid Oklahoma). Herman enjoyed playing basketball in High School and in his early years. His father relocated his family to Wichita, Kansas where he met longtime friend Bobby Hawkins. To this day, Bobby and Herman have been best friends. If you saw one, the other was present.
Herman worked at Boeing and attended Wichita State University until he enlisted in the US Army. He served from 1957-1959. Herman worked for the US Postal Service in Wichita Kansas for several years. Herman met his wife Claudia J. Byrd and married in 1964 and Herman moved to Seattle Washington and worked for the Federal Government where he retired.
Deacon Owens had a love for the Lord and lived his life serving. Goodwill Baptist Church (Seattle Washington) was fundamental in his journey of becoming a Deacon (1976). When his mother (Elzeter Owens) became ill, Deacon Owens moved back to Wichita and became the main caregiver for his mother. Deacon Owens immediately found a church home in Wichita (Strangers Rest Baptist Church) where he continued to serve as a Deacon. Even though in his last years of life, he was unable to attend church, it did not stop him from reciting scriptures, having bible study, or educating others about his God.
Herman grew up with a strong mother who instilled respect, work ethics and gave him the tools he needed to serve the Lord. Deacon Owens never met a stranger and would help anyone. He was a father to some and a role model to many. He was a sharp dresser and enjoyed the finer things in life, but still he was humbled and graceful.
