Obituary

Gregory Lamont "Hitman" Williams passed away peacefully at home on February 21, 2026, with his loving wife, Necol and family by his side.  Born to Bernice Louise Williams in Chickasha, Oklahoma on November 4th, 1961, the youngest of five, Greg was always an inquisitive "force" who constantly questioned how the world worked and why. This led to Greg finding his calling at the age of ten, when his mother gave him a tape recorder. He fell in love with audio, obsessively recording and re-recording impressions of Paul Lynde and Howard Cosell until they were perfect. This quest for excellence and perfection led him to create WESR, Wichita East Student Radio in 1977.

By the age of 17, Greg was already a trailblazer, landing a weekday shift at Wichita's AM Top 40 station, KLEO—A rare feat for a teenager and a man of color at that time. After a brief stint at KCBQ in San Diego, he returned to Wichita in 1983, beginning a 17-year run at KKRD.  In 1995, to help transition 93.9 from an Urban Adult Contemporary station to POWER hip-hop, he was given the opportunity to be the face of "POWER" 93.9 as the "Hitman." For over 25 years he hosted the market's number #1 morning drive show.  But more than an on-air personality, Hitman was Program and Brand Manager in charge of the station's programming, marketing, and overall brand strategy. He worked diligently to ensure audience engagement, revenue growth, and a consistent station identity. He is known for bringing some of the biggest names in entertainment to the Wichita area, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, and Earth, Wind and Fire. He put Wichita on the map. His legendary career earned him an induction into The Kansas African American Museum Hall of Fame, the Journalism Trailblazer Award, and the Gavin Magazine Award for Music Director of the year.

On June 4th, 2010, Greg married the love of his life, Necol. They traveled and celebrated life with their children and friends. At home, Greg was the master of smoked meats during the holidays and a devoted grandfather who took great joy in playing Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny for his grandchildren.

In Greg's Words: "I am blessed. I am doing the one thing I ever wanted to do in life. The fact that I am even in radio in and of itself is a miracle. As a child, I had a speech impediment that required speech therapy from the age of 8 through my years in college. Early in my career, I had to really concentrate on speaking clearly and correctly. So, speaking for a living, life, and career is all a bit surreal. My career in broadcasting has been a mirror of all the technological advancements that are still happening now and will continue to happen long after my life is over. I have played music on records with turntables, cart machines, digital audio wave files, and beyond. A technological career in broadcasting is always a forever evolving, growing, and advancing profession that requires the ability to adapt, change, grow, and advance."

Those left to cherish his memory: His devoted and loving wife Necol; Brother, Pastor, Eric Williams, Sister Rita Williams-Thompson; Children; Kristen Nolan, Jordan (Hillary) Nolan, Zach (Marissa) Nolan, Megan Peyton and Maya Simmons; Grandchildren: Luxe, Jaxon, Adeline, Lorelei, Zalena, Brynlee, Aurora, Beau, Milana. Niece, Shante (Bradley) Garner; great-nephew, Quentin Johnson and great niece, Maliya Garner and a host of many more extended family, friends and loved ones. We love you, Greg. You will be truly missed and forever in our hearts.

Greg has requested donations be made in his name to honor his memory to the following organizations: His Crawl for Cancer team in care of Sara Dillman; Phoenix Hospice; Wichita Children's Home.
