Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and companion, Cornelius Robert Carter Jr. He departed this life on October 26, 2024, at the age of 76 in Wichita, Kansas, surrounded by love and family.

Cornelius was born on August 9, 1948, in San Antonio, Texas, to Cornelius Robert Carter Sr. and Henrietta (Fraley) Carter. He was later raised by Samuel Winfield, who played an integral role in shaping the man he became. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Cornelius Carter III, his siblings Delores Ledford and William "Charlie" Winfield. He was also preceded in death by his mother, Henrietta (Fraley) Carter, his stepfather, Samuel Winfield, and his father, Cornelius Robert Carter Sr.

Cornelius Carter Jr. was followed in death by his sister Mosell Carter-Love

Cornelius spent much of his early life in Wichita, Kansas, after the family moved there due to his father's military service. He attended Wichita public schools and was passionate about sports and working with his hands. He developed a strong love for the arts, including pottery, macramé, and painting. Above all, he was known for his remarkable talent in the kitchen, where his culinary creations, especially his famous chocolate chip cookies, became legendary.

He worked for many years at Cudahy Excel and Boeing Aircraft, where he made lasting contributions to the companies he worked for until his retirement. After retiring, Cornelius took pride in his self-employment, utilizing his skills and talent to continue projects that brought him joy and provided for his family.

In 1980, Cornelius married Sylvia Mathews, and they were blessed with four children: Crystal, Cornelius R. III (who preceded him in death), Cornelius M. (Cory), and Chase. Cornelius was a devoted father, involved in his children's lives, always supporting their education, extracurricular activities, and life's milestones. He was also a proud and loving father to Wytongia and Janasia, his daughters embracing them with the same love and commitment.

In 1998, Cornelius met the love of his life, Glenda Smith. They shared 26 wonderful years together, building a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Cornelius had a special bond with Glenda's children: Shawna Smith, Ronell Smith, and Renette Smith, who he welcomed into his heart.

Known for his impeccable fashion sense, Cornelius was a man who always stood out in a crowd. He had an eye for style, particularly enjoying exotic shoes, stylish hats, and a love for the color red, which he felt complemented his skin tone. Hatman Jack's and Dillard's were his go-to spots for finding the perfect accessories to complete his look.

Cornelius also lived life to the fullest, traveling the world with Glenda to attend events such as the Essence Festival, Mardi Gras, and Tom Joyner Cruises. His adventures allowed him to meet celebrities like Bruce Bruce and Snoop Dogg, but he always kept his family close to his heart, especially when visiting his relatives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he cherished the time spent with extended family.

An avid gardener, Cornelius had a green thumb, growing vibrant flowers, including his signature 10-foot-tall elephant ears and palm trees. He took great pride in his backyard garden, where he often hosted legendary parties that brought family and friends together to celebrate life with delicious food, laughter, and love.

Cornelius' kind and gentle spirit, combined with his infectious sense of humor, made him beloved by all who knew him. He was the kind of man whose presence was magnetic, someone who made others feel special, seen, and appreciated. His thoughtful hugs, warm kisses, and sincere farewells were cherished by those who were fortunate enough to be in his life.

Cornelius is survived by his life companion of 26 years, Glenda Smith, his five children: Wytongia Carter (Tillis), Crystal D. McCrary (Carter), Cornelius M. (Cory) Carter, Chase A. Carter, and Janasia Portley. He was a proud grandfather to 10 grandchildren: Tannica Tillis, Marquel Tillis, Phoenix Arbertha, Zion Carter-Arbertha, Nevaeh Carter, Matthew McCrary, Maddix McCrary, Anaysha Mitchell, Amiyah Grayson, and Mia Carter, and he also leaves behind 10 great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly.

Cornelius is also survived by his siblings: Leonard Carter, Denise Winfield, and David Carter of Altus, OK, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and many dear friends who were all cherished parts of his life.

Although we mourn the loss of a truly remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that Cornelius' legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. His love, wisdom, humor, and generosity will continue to inspire and guide us. He will be profoundly missed but forever remembered.

Rest in peace, Cornelius Robert Carter Jr. (Nee-is) You will always be loved, appreciated, and remembered "Big Dog."
